Second stage of Metropolitan Development of Northern districts of Marseilles. Masters degree project. Marseilles France.
OBJECTIVES:
Renovation of social housing in northern Marseilles using the conception of Urban Archipelago.
La Savine
Context:
The project area is situated in the 16th district of Marseille, within the Savine Housing Group. The 16th district is the farthest and most isolated compared to any other districts in Marseille. The site is positioned on the top of a steep hill, surrounded by derelict and abandoned natural green areas, acting as a barrier to pedestrian commuting.
Project:
In line with the green archipelago theory, the proposal suggested utilizing the isolating features of the site and turning them into the focal points of the project.
This involved transforming the desolate grounds of the Savine housing group into a green island that would connect the archipelago and function as a natural bridge to the main city. Additionally, the proposal included plans to repurpose the abandoned nature observatory for educational and tourist activities, making it accessible to both the residents of the nearby district and those in the main city.
The proposal includes the introduction of the abandoned nature observatory, featuring educational and touristic activities. These facilities would be accessible to both the residents of the nearby district and to those in the main city.
As part of efforts to improve the living conditions of the Savine housing group, the project encompasses the renovation of buildings on-site, the introduction of public spaces, making it more pedestrian-friendly, and the installation of a cable-way network to open up the district to visitors.
