Reconstruction of former cloister and its transformation into an Innovation and Social Business center in Catering and Sustainable Agriculture.

Context:

The Social Center for Difficult Youth located in a former cloister in the outskirts of Marseilles has lost its primary function and required changes to continue its existence. Previously it has provided services for occupational integration in the catering domain

Project:

Apprentils d'Auteuil Social Association decides to reorient the cloister into a gateway site between the social affairs and business favoring population with reduced possibilities The site will host :

  • a restaurant facility for training students in catering, supported by its own farm;

  • nursery

  • meeting facilities, office space, and co-working;

  • Mediterranean botanical garden,greenhouse,

  • museum of Agriculture

The main idea was to highlight the inner courtyard of the cloister, which is the heart of the building and is the most favorable place for events and all public activities. This fact determined the location of all public flues and main functions and centralized them toward the main access through the garden.
